Membership
JOURNAL MEMBERSHIP COMPETITION
Membership of the Mississippi Law Journal is limited to rising second-year law students who successfully complete the Journal’s annual membership competition in the summer following their first year.
The Journal strongly encourages all rising 2Ls to participate in the membership competition. The Journal does not participate in a grade-on policy or require a minimum GPA to participate in the membership competition. This is to promote and facilitate an equal opportunity for all prospective staff editors. All participants are expected to attend a brief meeting in the Spring to discover more about the membership competition. This information will be posted on our social media and distributed through the Law School email system.
The membership competition includes a Bluebook editing exercise, a case brief of a recent Mississippi appellate court opinion, and a publication-quality case note. All three exercises are reviewed and scored anonymously.
The number of editors selected for Journal membership typically ranges from 30 to 40 members, but this number varies each year. The Journal expects to invite editors to join over the course of several days during the first half of the summer. This timeline is subject to change, and any updates will be posted to this website when available or will be communicated via TWEN.
Orientation for newly invited staff editors will begin a few days before Fall classes commence.
